TIPS & RECIPES FOR MACA MAGIC
There are many ways of using maca as an everyday food source. The recipes and tips on this page represent only a fraction of infinite possibilities...
1) Basic Smoothie:
(An Herbs America staple)
Scoop 2 teaspoons of Maca Magic into your favorite juice or milk product. Add tasty fruits, nuts, yogurt, and ice, and blend until smooth. Enjoy. It's delicious and nutritious!
2) Big Momma's Magic Maca Shake:
(Created by The Sweet Truth's Kelly Keough for Martin Lawrence on the set of Big Momma's House 2).
Mix 2 teaspoons of Maca Magic, 1 frozend banana, 1 cup frozen blueberries, 1/2 cup frozen or fresh strawberries, 1/2 cup frozen or fresh black raspberries, 1 cup almond milk, 1/4 cup organic hemp seeds, 2 scoops hemp protein powder, 1 tsp. stevia powder, 2 tbsp. agave and a 1/2 tsp. cinnamon in a blender. Serve Immediately!
3) Kefir Berry Surprise:
(A testimonial shared by Julie Meyers from Tuscon, Arizona).
"Here's a great smoothie recipe that has a lot of benefits:
Gather 1 Tbls Golden flax seed, freshly ground, 1 Cup Organic Kefir (1% milkfat, plain), 1 Tbls Maca powder, 1 pkt Xylitol plus (Xylitol w/ Stevia), ¼ Tsp Maple flavoring (I use Frontier which is alcohol free & all natural), 3/8 tsp organic cinnamon (adjust for taste), ½ Cup frozen organic blueberries, and ½ Cup frozen organic raspberries.
Grind up flax seed then mix the next 5 ingredients till smooth. Add frozen fruit. Blend till smooth. You may need to stir down to mix thoroughly. (I figured the calorie count is 270 + Maca count. Not bad for breakfast.)
If you prefer, use 1 tbls of flax seed oil with high Lignans (fiber). (Calorie count is 336 + maca count.)
This is my yogurt version that is like a chunky pudding. (it works very well if you want to have something to chew.)
I use 1 Cup of plain organic yogurt; mix in everything but the fruit. Then add the frozen fruit on top (don’t mix in) and top with chopped walnuts (about ¼ Cup). I put this together in the morning (6:30-7:30 am) then take it to work. By that time I’m ready to eat (8:00 am), the Raspberries have melted and the juice mixes in when you mix it all together. I do not put the Xylitol plus in because it’s sweet enough. I’m addicted to this and it keeps me full till noon. 340 Calories + maca count (No snacking necessary.)
If you prefer flax seed oil, use 1 tbls of the one with High Lignans (fiber). It doesn’t change the taste one bit. I like the seeds because of the benefit of fiber and less calories. Calorie count is a little more at 406 + Maca Count."
4) Maca Sunshine Cereal:
(Created by Ani Phyo and Ede Schweizer, co authors of "The Art of Raw" uncookbook. Ani's uncooking classes are offered through Whole Foods Markets' Salud Cooking School in Portland and Seattle, and her seminars are taught at the Adidas Village Center in Portland).
Mix equally into 2 bowls: 2 teaspoons of Maca Magic, 1 mango, apple, or orange deseeded and cubed, 1 banana sliced, 1/4 cup sunflower seeds, soaked and chopped, 1/4 cup almonds, soaked and chopped, 1/4 cup buckwheaties (buckwheat groats soaked 8-12 hours and air-dried or dehydrated) and 1/8 cup dried cranberries.
Sprinkle each with 1 teaspoon of Maca Magic. Add milk. Serves 2.
5) Ray's Maca Balls O' Energy:
(Ray Flores, one of the original Dogtowners, is well known in skateboarding and snowboarding circles. Visit Ray at the Board Gallery Surf & Skate Shop in Venice Beach, CA)
Mix 2 teaspoons of Maca Magic with 1/2 cup of any nut or seed butter. Add brown rice syrup, honey or maple syrup, along with 3 tbsp. of raisins. Pour in 2 tbsp. of sunflower oil or melted butter and 1/4 cup oatmeal.
Knead ingredients in bowl, and roll into bite size balls. Try with spirulina, hemp or flaxseed, or granola. Recipe makes about 6 energy balls.
6) Frozen Maca-Lada:
Scoop 2 teaspoons of Maca Magic into 3 parts cold pineapple juice and 2 parts coconut milk. Add a dash of vanilla extract and honey, 2-4 ice cubes or a handful of crushed ice. Blend until smooth, sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmeg.
7) Maca Malt Shake:
Scoop 2 teaspoons of Maca Magic on top of vanilla or chocolate ice cream. Add cream or milk. Blend until smooth.
